Privacy Policy

What we collect, why we collect it, and the control you have over your data. We keep it minimal — only what's needed to run the list.

This Privacy Policy explains how TheDiscordList handles your information when you sign in with Discord, list a server, add our bot, or browse the directory. We are the data controller for the information described here. We never sell your personal data.

01 What we collect

When you sign in with Discord, we receive only the data you authorize through OAuth:

Account basics — your Discord user ID, username, avatar, and email address
Your Discord server list — the servers you belong to and your role in them, so we can show you which ones you're able to list and keep manager access in sync. We store only the servers relevant to your listings
Server data — for servers you list: the server ID, name, icon, member counts, and the invite and details you submit
Bot data — for bots you list: the application ID, name, avatar, and the description and details you submit. Verifying that you own a bot involves reading its public application description
Reports you file — if you report a listing, we store your account ID alongside the report so we can follow up and prevent abuse of the report system
Usage & logs — bump times, votes, page views, how long a visit lasts, and how far you get through the add-a-listing flow. Server logs keep IP addresses briefly for security; our analytics do not

We do not read your server messages. Our bot only needs permission to post bump confirmations and verify ownership.

02 Listings we import

Some listings on TheDiscordList were not submitted by their owner. We import public information about Discord servers — name, icon, description, tags, and public invite — from other public directories and public Discord endpoints, so that the list is useful from day one. These listings carry no owner account and no personal data beyond what the server itself publishes.

If you administer an imported server, it becomes yours automatically the first time you sign in with Discord, and you can then edit or delete it like any other listing. If you would rather it were removed and you do not want an account, email [email protected] and we will take it down.

03 How we use your data

We use the information above to authenticate you, display and rank your listings, process bumps and points, run premium subscriptions, send service notifications, prevent abuse, and improve the directory. We process this data on the basis of providing the service you requested and our legitimate interest in keeping it safe and functional.

We may send transactional emails (receipts, security alerts, important changes). Marketing emails are opt-in and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Automated review. Listing text and images are screened automatically when submitted, to catch prohibited content before it reaches the directory. We also use automated processing to suggest categories and tags and to power semantic search. This screening can result in a listing being held for human review — it never bans an account on its own, and a person makes the final call on removals and suspensions.

04 Who we share it with

Your public listing details (server name, icon, description, member counts, ranking) are visible to everyone — that's the point of a directory. Beyond that, we share personal data only with the service providers that help us operate, under contract and only as needed:

Stripe — payments and subscriptions. Receives the billing data required to take payment
Discord — sign-in, server and bot data, and our bot's messages in your server
Cloudflare — content delivery, bot protection, and cookieless traffic analytics
PostHog (EU region) — product analytics: which pages are opened, how long a visit lasts, and how far people get through the add-a-listing flow. Nothing is stored on your device and no profile is built for signed-out visitors
OpenAI — automated content screening, category and tag suggestions, and search embeddings. Listing text is sent for processing; it is not used to train their models
Hosting, email & error monitoring — the infrastructure that runs the site and alerts us when something breaks

Some of these providers are based outside the European Economic Area, mainly in the United States. Where that is the case, transfers rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard. We may disclose data if required by law or to protect the safety of our users. We never sell your data to advertisers.

05 Cookies & analytics

We use a small number of cookies and they fall into two groups. Essential ones keep you signed in and protect the site against abuse. The rest remember a choice you made yourself — servers or bots, how listings are sorted, your language, and whether to show age-restricted listings. Nothing here follows you between sites.

Our analytics store nothing on your device at all. We count page views, how long a visit lasts, and how far people get through the add-a-listing flow. If you are signed in, that activity is linked to your account through an internal account number — never your Discord ID, and never your name or email. If you are signed out, you are not identified and no profile is created; the visit is held together by the same session that keeps the site working, and it ends when the session does.

We do not record your screen, we do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not sell data. Because nothing is stored on your device for tracking, there is no cookie banner to click. You can clear or block cookies in your browser, though doing so may break sign-in.

06 Your rights & choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, to object to certain processing, and to ask us to restrict it. You can edit most details directly in your dashboard and settings.

To delete your account and associated personal data, use the option in Settings or email us. We'll respond to verified requests within 30 days. Disconnecting our bot and revoking the Discord authorization stops any further data collection.

If you are in the European Economic Area and you think we've handled your data wrongly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority. We'd appreciate the chance to put it right first — email [email protected].

07 Retention & security

We keep your data for as long as your account is active, plus a short period afterward to comply with legal, tax, and anti-fraud obligations. Deleted listings and accounts are purged from our active systems within 30 days, except where retention is legally required.

We protect your data with encryption in transit, access controls, and regular review. No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to keep yours safe. Questions? Email [email protected].
