How to Promote Your Discord Server Without Getting Banned
Most promotion bans come from four repeatable mistakes. Here's what crosses the line at Discord's level versus a server's level, and the channels that reliably work instead.
There are two very different punishments people call "getting banned", and confusing them leads owners into the worst version of both. A server ban means one community removed you. A Discord account or server termination means your community is gone, with limited recourse. Almost every termination story traces back to a handful of tactics that felt like shortcuts.
The four things that actually get accounts terminated
Unsolicited mass DMs. Sending your invite to people who did not ask, at volume, is spam under Discord's policies. It does not matter that you wrote it by hand or that each message is slightly different. Recipients report it, the reports aggregate, and the account goes. This is the single most common way a growing server loses its owner account.
Automating a user account. Any script, selfbot, or tool that acts through your personal account, whether it joins servers, posts in advertising channels, or DMs on a timer, is prohibited. Bots must be real bot accounts using the API. "It's just automating what I'd do manually" is exactly the thing the rule covers.
Buying or botting members. Paid member services deliver alt accounts and bot accounts. Discord removes them, sometimes in waves months later, and inflating a member count this way puts the whole server at risk. It also destroys the only number that matters: a server showing 5,000 members and 12 daily posters converts worse than one showing 400 and 12, because visitors read the ratio.
Fake or leveraged giveaways. "Invite 10 people to enter" turns your members into the spammers, and the reports land on your server. Giveaways promising Nitro or currency you do not have are straightforwardly deceptive. Run giveaways for real prizes, entered by reacting, not by recruiting.
Server-level bans are a different, cheaper mistake
Posting your invite in someone else's server without permission gets you banned from that server. That is a normal cost of doing business, and it is survivable, but it burns a community you might have partnered with later and it earns you a reputation among moderators who talk to each other more than owners expect.
The rule of thumb: if a server has an advertising channel with posted rules, use it and follow the cooldown exactly. If it does not, ask a moderator first. One DM to a moderator asking "do you allow partner posts, and what are the terms?" is worth more than fifty drive-by invites.
Where promotion works without risk
Directories. This is the one channel built for the purpose. People arrive already looking for a server to join, which is a fundamentally better audience than anyone you interrupt. Get listed under the category that genuinely matches your community, whether that is gaming, anime or technology, add specific tags, and bump on the schedule the directory allows. Bumping is not spam when the platform provides the button; skipping it is just leaving traffic on the table.
Partnerships. A mutual announcement between two servers of similar size, agreed in advance, is the highest-trust traffic you can get. It is slower than blasting invites and it converts several times better because the recommendation comes from someone the reader already follows.
Your own audience elsewhere. A YouTube description, a Twitch panel, a GitHub README, a link in your Twitch or Bluesky bio, a pinned post on your own subreddit. Nobody can ban you from your own surfaces, and these compound.
Communities where you are already a member. Reddit, forums, Matrix rooms and Discord servers all tolerate a link from someone who has been contributing for weeks and none from someone who joined an hour ago. Read the self-promotion rules, then earn the right to post by being useful first. Most subreddits have an explicit policy; ignoring it gets the post removed and often the account shadowbanned from that sub.
Paid placement. If a directory sells promoted placement, that is advertising with the platform's consent, which is the definition of safe promotion. Only buy it once your listing converts organically, otherwise you are paying to amplify a page that does not work.
A pre-post checklist
Before any promotion goes out, run through this:
- Is the invite set to never expire (or the longest option Discord offers you), with unlimited uses? An expired link is the most common silent failure.
- Are you posting where posting is explicitly allowed, under the stated cooldown?
- Did a human write this specific post for this specific audience, or is it the same paragraph you paste everywhere?
- Does the server have working moderation before the traffic arrives? Enable AutoMod rules, set the verification level so brand-new accounts cannot post instantly, and have at least one moderator awake in the hours you are promoting. If you list on TheDiscordList, turn on the free Robot check so raid bots have to pass a Cloudflare challenge before they ever see your invite.
- Is there something for arrivals to do in the first 60 seconds? A rules screen, a role picker, and one channel with recent messages.
That last point is where most of the damage happens. Promotion sends a burst of unfamiliar accounts at a server with no raid protection, someone posts something awful, and now you have a moderation incident on top of a growth problem.

If you are already suspended
Request a review in the Discord app under User Settings → Account Standing, which still opens on a suspended account, and nowhere else. Do not create an alt account to keep running the server, because ban evasion turns a temporary problem into a permanent one and can take the server with it. Discord has no co-owner role, so prepare before anything happens: make sure two or three trusted admins already hold Manage Server and moderation permissions, so the community keeps running if your own account is ever out of action. Third-party "unban services" are scams without exception.
Start here: audit every place your invite currently appears, delete the posts that went up without permission, and replace them with one properly categorised directory listing and two partner conversations you actually asked for.
