Why Premium Works the Way It Does

Premium gives paying servers a real edge — more features and a genuine boost in the ranking — without letting the same handful of servers own the front page forever. Here's the thinking behind that balance.

Every listing site has to answer one uncomfortable question: what does paying actually buy you? Buy too little and premium is pointless. Buy too much and the site turns into a paywalled leaderboard where the same five servers sit at the top forever, nobody new is ever discovered, and visitors stop coming back.

We picked a spot in the middle on purpose. This guide explains where that line sits and why.

The problem with "pay to win" directories

Imagine a directory where premium simply pins you to the top. The highest bidders lock the first page, and every visitor sees the same servers on every visit.

It feels great if you're one of those five servers. It's terrible for everyone else — including you, over time.

  • Visitors stop discovering. People come to a listing site to find new communities. If the front page never changes, there's nothing to discover, so they stop returning.
  • Traffic dries up. Less returning traffic means fewer eyes on every listing — including the premium ones paying for placement. You'd be buying a bigger slice of a shrinking pie.
  • New servers never get a foothold. A great community that launched last week has zero chance against a permanent wall of paid slots. So they never list, and the catalogue stops growing.

A directory that always shows the same results isn't a directory. It's a billboard. And billboards don't build an audience.

What we optimize for instead

The whole platform is tuned around one goal: keep people discovering servers so there's a real audience to be discovered by.

That means the front page has to stay alive. Rankings blend genuine signals — recent activity, engagement, bumps, votes, freshness — and results rotate so that visiting twice doesn't show the exact same grid. New and rising servers get real visibility. Discovery stays worth doing.

Premium fits inside that system. It doesn't replace it.

What premium actually gets you

Premium is a real, meaningful advantage — it just isn't an off switch for everyone else.

  • A genuine boost in the ranking algorithm. In the default Recommended order, premium multiplies your listing's score: 1.3× on Gold, 1.6× on Platinum and 2× on Diamond, and every bump earns 1.5×, 2× or 3× the points. That raises your odds of a top slot on every visit; it never guarantees one. You're competing from a stronger position — you're just still competing, alongside the freshness and activity signals every listing earns.
  • The full feature set. Card flair and a tier badge, a place among the promoted cards mixed into browse pages, extra categories, five profile links instead of one, scheduled and pinned posts, and on Platinum and Diamond an animated banner and a custom join button. These are yours the moment you subscribe — no algorithm involved.
  • Higher limits and better tooling. More maintainers, 14- and 30-day analytics instead of 7, hosted status pages for bots, and priority support on Diamond.

The Premium comparison table: bump points 1.5×, 2× and 3×, the same 8-hour bump cooldown on every tier, discovery visibility, extra categories, maintainers and the other perks per tier.

See every tier side by side on the Premium page.

The boost is powerful precisely because the rest of the page is fair. When discovery is healthy and visitors keep coming back, ranking higher within that flow is worth a lot. If the page were frozen, the boost would be worthless — because nobody would be looking.

Why this is better for premium members too

This is the part that's easy to miss: the fairness is the value.

A premium boost is only worth paying for if there's a real, engaged audience on the other side of it. That audience exists because the site is a place people come back to — to browse, to discover, to find something they haven't seen before. Freezing the rankings to sell permanent top slots would kill the very traffic premium is meant to reach.

So premium buys you the strongest possible position in a system that stays busy — not a quiet throne in a room everyone left.

The short version

  • Discovery has to stay fresh, or nobody comes back — and then there's no one to discover you.
  • Premium is a real edge: a genuine algorithm boost plus the full feature set.
  • It's a boost within a fair system, not a lock on the front page.
  • That balance is what keeps the audience — and the value of your boost — alive.

Premium rewards the people who invest in their community, while the platform stays a place worth visiting. Both sides win, which is the only version of this that lasts.
